Safety Tips for Travelers

What you should know

What we have tried to do in this section is to provide you with general information about airline travel. It is important to realize however, that each airline has specific rules that make up the contract of carriage. These rules may differ among the carriers. They include provisions such as check-in deadlines, limits on liability for lost baggage, responsibility for delayed flights, and many other things.

Travelers/Passengers

Nigerian Airport Safety Tips include the following:

  • Look out for displayed sign boards as you enter the Airport premises.

  • Relate with identified Airline/Airport officials with the help of displayed ID-cards

  • Do not patronize Touts for your own Safety and Security

  • Surrender yourself for screening before boarding

  • Call on Uniformed Airport/Aviation Security personnel if and when you need help.

  • When aboard, pay very close attention to the crew and Air host/hostess

  • Contact the nearest crew for assistance

  • To depart Airport, patronize only Airport Registered car hire services with ID-card.


Airline Safety

Air travel is very safe, but there are a few information which can help you in future or in the unlikely event of an emergency. Most air travelers tend to take safety for granted. They tune out the flight announcement on emergency demonstrations and do not read the safety leaflet card. This results in needless and avoidable injuries or deaths when there is an emergency.

Bear the following in mind whenever you board a plane;

Make sure that your hand luggage is light and fits in under your seat or in the hat rack.

A baggage not properly stored or secured can be dangerous during an evacuation.

Precautions should be taken on the type of items you store in the bag to avoid spillage;

The racks are meant for soft items like coats, blankets, pillows and not hard suitcases e.g.;

Whenever you are seated, always fasten your seat belt;

In an emergency, you do not want to struggle with your seat belts, so listen to the crew demonstration of the emergency procedure;

Always remove your shoes during evacuation and do not carry your belongings with you;

Ensure that after landing, the aircraft comes to a complete stop before you stand up;

There are safety leaflet cards provided on every airline seat pocket for emergency information. Always read the instructions and listen to the cabin crews announcements;

Emergency exits are clearly marked on every aircraft;

Oxygen masks are situated in the compartments above your head or in front of you depending on the type of aircraft and it automatically drops or you pull out when there is decompression. Do not panic; fix it over your nose and mouth and breathe normally. Always fix your own before you fix your child's. Separate emergency oxygen masks are provided for infants/ children;

Emergency exits are normally to be operated only by the crew on board;

All airlines carry on board flights, fully equipped first aid kits;

There are also life jackets situated under your seat. Follow the instructions given before you wear it and you should wear your own before your child's.



Facilities

The entire Airport is equipped with expensive, sensitive & sophisticated equipments that are best handled with care. Therefore at Airport premises;

Do not switch on or off any electrical appliances. Call on the nearest Airport official to do it for you.

Do not go to any unauthorized place especially on the Aircraft movement area.

Do not touch any Airfield lighting or cables as the high voltage are dangerous.

Kindly obey Airport Security Officials for your own safety.

Do not approach a propeller Engine Aircraft directly in front - follow the staircase only or seek assistance.

The No-smoking signs should be strictly observed.

No un-authorized person or vehicle should enter the tarmac.
